The Benefits of Aqua Aerobics

In 2013 I was preparing to begin the biggest personal challenge I’ve ever undergone - and finally jump with both feet into the waters of improving my health and fitness. I had tossed around the idea of joining an Aqua Aerobics class at the YMCA, but I was scared to go alone for fear of looking like an idiot…or drowning.

In the grocery store with my husband one day, I say, “B would you really do anything (as he so often put it) to help me lose weight”? B, (with conviction) “Yes, I would. I would even walk over there right now and throw this box of brownies I just picked up straight in the trash”.

Me, “Well, that would be a very big sacrifice (insert eye roll). But, what I would like is for you to accompany me to Aqua Aerobics tomorrow.” Silence. If you know my husband, you know this ask was a stretch of gargantuan proportion.

Mercifully, I decided not to press the issue. Instead, I kept daughter’s #2 and #3 out of school the next day — just so I didn’t have to go all by myself. How many of us does it take for mom to try an Aqua Aerobics class for the very first time? Apparently, a minimum of 3.

If you are scared to go, just like I was, let me start by educating you on some of the many benefits of Aqua Aerobics.

  1. Water Helps Keep Your Body Cool: Considering the current heat wave (I’m in Alabama this summer), this is a very very good thing. The lower body temp actually allows you to exercise longer than you might be able to out of the pool.

  2. Low Stress on Your Joints and Muscles: The water supports your body while still allowing you the freedom to move. This puts less stress on your joints and muscles. Rehabbing an injury? Have a lot of weight to lose? This is the place to start.

  3. Builds Strength: Just because the water alleviates serious stress on the joints and muscles, doesn’t mean your muscles don’t get a workout. Fighting against the push and pressure of the water activates your muscles and makes strength gains very possible.

  4. Greater Range of Motion: The absence of gravity in the water means greater range of motion. I haven’t yet mastered a hand stand on land, but in the water, it’s more than possible. Range of motion matters for good health and long term mobility.

  5. It’s Super Fun: You will laugh, and get a great overall workout. You will feel amazing exiting the pool and the feeling will last all day.
